Cape Wind

The Nantucket Sound wind farm–Cape Wind–has been struggling to overcome well-connected and well-moneyed opposition. Cape Wind would produce about 170 megawatts, about 75% of the average energy demand for Cape Cod and the Islands. From the Cape the project’s wind turbines will appear to be about 1/2″ above the horizon. The project is being discussed this week in number of public meetings. For the meeting schedule and more information about the project go to the Cape Wind website. Crude oil and gasoline prices are at or near all-time highs. How can Massachusetts not support this project?

Does a wind farm like this de-value the “million dollar view” that property owners in well off towns like Chatam and Welfleet own? And isn’t the project funded by increased taxes for these towns? Seems like a catch 22 for water front owners.

I think this is a great idea. People often overlook the value that alternative sources of energy can have on the environment as a whole. I say the more alternative sources that can be found, the better, no matter who opposes them because of their lack of aesthetic nature.

I think it is mostly a case of high powered wealthy individuals such as Edward Kennedy who worry that the windmills will obstruct the beautiful view that they get from their beach front properties. Other concerns are that it could negatively impact housing values and local tourism. However this if funny because I believe the windmills are supposed to be eight miles off the coast and would appear to be about the size of the onlooker’s thumb.

It may not be politics at its best, but however unfortunate, sometimes money talks the loudest.
