“Years mark the end, not beginning, of a period” says Jeff’s comment to my January 1 post. (I know I should let this go. I can’t help myself.) He goes on to say “a 24 year old has completed 24 years and is already starting his 25th.” Agreed. So a 29 year old has completed 29 years and is starting this 30th. Is this 29 year old three decades old? No. He “has completed [29] years and is already starting his [30th].” He won’t start his 4th decade until he completes his 30th year. To count otherwise is the same as me paying you nine dollar bills, then paying you one penny and saying “you’ve got ten dollars.”
