It Pays to Specialize

A recent discussion about cybersquatting led to the topic of “popesquatting.” A few years ago Rogers Cadenhead registered the domain name benedictXVI.com before the 2005 papal conclave elected Josef Alois Ratzinger as Pope Benedict XVI. Here’s a link to a Katie Couric interview with a bemused Cadenhead, discussing his good fortune. I wonder if he ever got the mitre.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be really something
which I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and extremely
broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!

I found the interview very interesting. Although his ‘requests’ are far from modest, I do give Cadenhead a lot of credit for not selling out to ecommerce sites. It was unclear as to what he meant by “deal-breaker” but it seemed as if he was willing to give the site to the Vatican without hesitation. Since he could have received a lot of money for selling this domain name to a gambling or pornographic website, Cadenhead can’t be blamed for wanting a large compensation for doing the right thing.
